Field-Tested Gear

I Have Owned a Dozen Bushcraft Knives. This Hand-Forged Serbian One Made Me Sell the Rest.

Tactical-looking, factory-ground, coated in paint that chips. That was my drawer of fixed blades. Then a hand-forged Serbian hunting knife showed me what I had been settling for.

A good fixed blade is the most personal piece of gear an outdoorsman owns. It is the one tool you would keep if you had to drop everything else. So it always bothered me that most of mine were mass-produced, over-coated, and ground to a generic edge that needed work the day I unboxed them. They looked the part on a belt. They underperformed in the hand.

I had the tactical ones with the aggressive jimping and the blacked-out everything. I had the budget bushcraft blades that went dull if you looked at a baton wrong. None of them felt like they were made by a person who actually used a knife.

Where this one comes from

The Predator Knife is built by Almazan Kitchen, the team behind the cooking channel watched billions of times, forged on Rtanj Mountain in Serbia. It is based on a traditional Serbian hunting and bushcraft pattern: a hand-forged carbon alloy blade with a distinctive belly and finger choil, wrapped in a genuine cowhide leather handle. No paint, no plastic, no committee design.

You feel it the moment you pick it up. The leather grip is warm and locks into your palm, wet or dry. The blade is hardened to 60 HRC, so the edge bites and holds. And the forged finish means every one is slightly different.

First feather stick told me everything. The edge bit, curled, and kept going. No fighting, no stropping first.

One blade, real work

Across a season it did everything I ask of a field knife. Processing kindling and feather sticks. Field dressing and breaking down game. Slicing food at camp without a second thought, because it is clean carbon, not painted mystery metal. The belly is shaped for long carving and skinning strokes, and the choil lets you choke up for fine control on detail work.

Carbon steel: know this going in

This is carbon alloy, so it takes a keener edge than stainless and will patina and rust if neglected. Wipe it dry, keep it lightly oiled, and do not store it wet. Standard care for anyone who already runs a carbon blade or a cast-iron pan. The leather handle likewise appreciates the occasional conditioning.

The verdict

For under a hundred dollars it punches so far above its price that I genuinely thinned out my collection after buying it. If you want a fixed blade that was clearly designed by people who use one, and that will earn its patina instead of chipping its coating, this is the one.
